What are the factors that affect the cost of cold storage?

As the core facility of modern cold chain logistics, the cost of cold storage is affected by multiple factors, including cold storage capacity, cold storage temperature, location of cold storage, etc. Today, Leng Di will analyze it in detail.

  1. Cold storage scale and capacity planning: The volume of cold storage is the basic cost driver. The larger the scale, the more insulation materials, refrigeration equipment and construction volume need to be increased. But it is worth noting that the unit cubic cost may decrease with the expansion of area. For example, the unit cost of a thousand-ton cold storage is usually lower than that of a small warehouse. In addition, the capacity needs to match the actual storage demand to avoid waste of resources caused by over-design.

  2. Temperature requirements and refrigeration intensity: Temperature requirements directly determine the complexity of the refrigeration system. The cost difference between conventional cold storage at 0~5℃ and quick-freezing storage below -30℃ is significant. The latter requires a higher power compressor and a thicker insulation layer.

  3. Regional environment and construction conditions: The insulation structure needs to be strengthened in the severe cold areas in the north, while the moisture-proof layer needs to be added in the high-humidity environment in the south. The material cost difference can reach 15%~20%. The underground cold storage involves earth excavation, waterproofing and structural reinforcement, so the cost is 30%~50% higher than that of the ground cold storage.

  4. Material and structural configuration: Polyurethane double-sided color steel plate has better thermal insulation performance than polystyrene plate, but the initial investment is higher. The pentahedral insulation design saves 10%~15% of the cost compared with the hexahedral full insulation structure, but the loss of the ground due to the frequency of forklift traffic needs to be evaluated.

  5. Refrigeration system selection and brand differences: Scroll compressors are suitable for small and medium-sized warehouses, while screw units are more suitable for large cold storage. Imported brands such as Bitzer and Copeland are 30%~50% more expensive than domestic equipment, but have more advantages in energy efficiency and failure rate.

  6. Functional zoning and special needs: Multi-temperature zone cold storage requires independent refrigeration system and insulation door. The cost of each additional compartment increases by 8%~12%. There are also some special function warehouses such as gas conditioning warehouses, pharmaceutical cold storage and explosion-proof cold storage, which are more expensive than ordinary cold storage.
