What is the difference between production cold storage and distribution cold storage?

Production cold storage and distribution cold storage are two different types of cold storage, which are significantly different in function, location, operation mode and structure:

  1. Functional positioning:

Production cold storage: It mainly serves production enterprises, has a large cold processing capacity, and is usually equipped with cooling and freezing equipment for cooling, quick freezing and other treatments of food during the production process, as well as short-term storage. This type of cold storage is often part of the food processing process and supports continuous operation on the production line.

Distribution cold storage: Its main function is storage and distribution. It is located in transportation hubs or densely populated cities. It is used to receive goods from production cold storage, store them, and then distribute them to consumers or other sales points.

  2. Location and scale:

Production cold storage: It is generally built in places where resources are relatively concentrated and close to the source of raw materials. Its scale and design are determined by the production process and the transportation conditions of the source of goods to meet the cooling and storage requirements of the production line.

Distributive cold storage is established in areas with convenient transportation and large populations. Its scale is determined according to the market demand and circulation capacity of the area to ensure that it can meet the distribution and circulation needs of goods.

  3. Operation mode:

Production cold storage: Usually closely integrated with food processing enterprises, the operation mode is mainly “zero in and whole out”, that is, after the raw materials enter the cold storage for processing, the products are sent out in batches.

Distributive cold storage: The operation mode is mainly “whole in and zero out”, that is, the cold storage receives the whole batch of goods for storage, and then sorts and distributes them to different sales points or consumers according to market demand.

  4. Structure and characteristics:

Production cold storage: Generally includes in and out goods room, picking room, medium/low temperature cold storage room and normal temperature hall, etc., emphasizing the processing and handling capabilities of products.

Distributive cold storage: In addition to the storage area, it usually has refreezing capacity and sorting system to ensure the quality of products during the distribution process.

In general, production cold storage is part of the food processing process, emphasizing the processing and handling of products; while distribution cold storage focuses on the storage, distribution and circulation of goods to meet market demand. The two play different roles in the supply chain, jointly ensuring the integrity of the food cold chain and the effective circulation of goods.
