What is the difference between cold storage and hot storage?

Cold storage and hot storage have significant differences in several aspects, mainly in their design purpose, temperature control range, application areas and types of stored items.

  1.Design purpose

Cold storage: The main design purpose of cold storage is to store items at low temperatures to maintain freshness, prevent spoilage, or to meet the specific requirements of certain items at low temperatures.

Hot storage: Hot storage is primarily used to store items at high temperatures, or for items that need to maintain performance or activity at higher temperatures. However, the term ‘hot storage’ is not common in conventional logistics and storage, and may refer to specific high-temperature environment storage facilities, such as those used to store certain chemicals or specialised materials.

  2.Temperature control range

Cold storage: Temperature control ranges in cold storage are usually very low and can be set between -25°C and +10°C or even lower, depending on the items to be stored and the requirements. For example, frozen food usually needs to be stored below -18°C.

Hot storage: Hot storage, on the other hand, has a higher range of temperature control, usually above room temperature, and can even reach temperatures of tens of degrees or more. The exact temperature depends on the requirements of the stored items.

  3.Application

Cold storage: Cold storage is widely used in food, medicine, chemical and other industries, used to store the need for low-temperature preservation or refrigeration of goods, such as meat, aquatic products, fruits and vegetables, pharmaceuticals, biological products and so on.

Hot storage: the application field of hot storage is relatively narrow, may mainly focus on some special chemical, material or research field, need high temperature environment to keep the performance or activity of the items.

  4. Types of storage items

Cold storage: Cold storage is mainly used to store items that need to be kept fresh or stable in a low-temperature environment, such as foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals.

Hot storage: Hot storage mainly stores those items that need to maintain performance or activity in a high temperature environment, such as certain chemical raw materials, special materials, biological samples and so on.

  5. Precautions

Both cold storage and hot storage require strict temperature control and management to ensure the quality and safety of the stored items.

When designing and constructing a cold or hot storage, factors such as the insulation and sealing of the building structure as well as the energy efficiency ratio of the equipment need to be taken into account.

When using cold storage or hot storage, it is necessary to comply with the relevant safety operating procedures and hygiene standards to ensure the safety of personnel and goods.

To summarise, cold storage and hot storage differ significantly in terms of the purpose for which they are designed, the temperature control range, the area of application and the type of goods stored. The choice of which type of warehouse to use needs to be based on specific item requirements and environmental conditions.
